Monks' Cord

This produces a smooth, stretchy cord,
like a monk's belt cords.
It is made very much like the plastic lanyard cords
whistles are often attached to.

First, choose 4 cords. They may be the same
or different colors. Tie a knot in one end.
You will be knotting up from this.

Sit in a chair with the knot held between your knees.
Spread out the four cords in different directions.

Bring the end of one cord OVER the one next to it.

Bring this second one OVER the first and third cords.
It sounds confusing but isn't -- look at the picture.

Now the third cord goes OVER the second and fourth.

The fourth cord now goes OVER the second...

...OVER the first...

...and through the loop the first one made at the beginning.

Pull on the ends of the cords, starting with
two opposite ends. Tighten those two a little...

...then the other two a little...

...going back and forth until you have a knot
that lies flat and looks like a pinwheel.

Continue to snug the knot down by pulling the ends of
opposite cords until it is tight but still shows its pinwheel form.

Now start over looping the four cords as you did before.
It doesn't matter which one you start with.
When you put the fourth cord through the loop,
you make it just like the other four.

Knot the end when it is as long as you want it to be, and trim the ends.
